Department of Biology
The science of Biology connects us all; it underpins our very existence, and advances in new technologies such as cloning and recombinant DNA have made this discipline more exciting than ever. Rapid advances in medicine, biotechnology and genetic engineering have raised ethical and social issues that we want our students to approach from a scientifically informed viewpoint.
At Crossley Heath we study the AQA Advanced Biology Specification. We have a highly experienced and supportive teaching team, committed to providing students with the best possible learning experience. Each class will be taught by a team of two specialist teachers. Biology, like all sciences, is a practical subject, and lessons in our highly equipped laboratories will reflect this. In addition, a residential field trip in Year 12 is an essential part of the course and is used to underpin much of the work in Ecology.
As well as enabling our students to achieve outstanding grades, the Biology Department will also offer you lots of opportunities to boost your transferable skills, such as mentoring younger students, competitions, leadership of or participation in the school Medical Society, hospital-based work experience placements, Strictly Science Club (where students give presentations on their personal areas of scientific interest), Environment and Wildlife Club, and much more. Popular degree courses taken by our Biology students include Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Optometry, Radiotherapy and Veterinary Medicine as well as Biology itself.
A grade 6 in Biology and a grade 5 in Chemistry or for those taking Double Science a grade 6 in each component.
“We believe every student deserves that moment when everything clicks into place and they are amazed by what they are learning. As students learn Biology, we aim to provide as many of these moments as possible”
Dr S Chipperfield (Department Leader)
