Department of Criminology – New for 2024!
This A level covers the study of Criminology, Law, Forensic Psychology and Sociological theory. Students will gain an understanding of different types of crime, consider why people commit crime, the influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported. They will gain a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict and develop the skills needed to examine information in order to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases.
An important part of the course is application of the understanding of criminality, criminology theories and the process of bringing an accused to court and being able to evaluate the effectiveness of social control to deliver criminal justice policy. An understanding of criminology is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work, the police and the prison service. It also helps prepare students wanting to study sociology, psychology, forensic science or criminology at University.
Entry Requirements
Entry requirements: A minimum of grade 5 in GCSE English Language and a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics.
