Student Leadership Programme

Our Student Leadership Programme helps to provide all students with opportunities to develop and practice leadership skills that prepare them well for future success and life beyond school.

Through student voice and student action we can harness the full potential of our fabulously diverse student body and build the strongest sense of togetherness between students, staff, governors, parents/carers and our local community partners.

Student leaders across all year groups work together in action groups to drive positive change in a number of important areas.  These action groups are:

Inclusion, diversity and community cohesion

Students who are passionate about bringing communities together in order to effect positive change drive this group. Students have opportunities to develop strong communication and interpersonal skills through community networking, developing community partnerships and community event organising. This student group works together to harness the full potential of our school’s fabulous cultural and ethnic diversity promoting our school and British values.

mental health and wellbeing

Students in this group are interested in working to support our school community to strengthen the support and provision for mental health and wellbeing.  Members will help to raise awareness of ways to promote positive mental health and wellbeing, help to organise mental health and wellbeing events, develop their knowledge and skills in relation to mental health, emotional fitness and wellbeing and take part in peer support activities.  The experience gained through working in this group will help students to be able to influence positive change and support for mental health and wellbeing as young adults. The group will assist in the school’s progress towards the Carnegie School Mental Health Award.

environment & sustainability

In a rapidly changing world, our school community needs to harness the voice and actions of students who have a strong desire to protect and improve our school, local community and global environment.  Through this leadership group, students will work together to consider ways that our school community can become more environmentally friendly and take action to achieve this.  Students will be a part of the Eco-Group lead by Miss Johnson and Miss Turner and will raise awareness of Eco-Group activities.  Students look to create community partnerships that can support a more environmentally sustainable future.

charity & fundraising

Students working in this leadership group work together to drive forward the school’s support for local, national and global charities.  With a strong sense of purpose to connect with our current and new charity partners, students will raise awareness in the school and local community of their good causes and fundraising efforts.  The group will help to organise and run charity and fundraising events throughout the year and promote opportunities for charitable volunteering.

media, marketing & promotion

This year we are looking for committed student leaders to help raise awareness of the work and activities that student leaders, across all action groups, undertake.  Successful applicants will work together to strengthen community awareness of our student leadership actions.  This will be done through appropriate advertising via social media, the school’s website, in-school promotions and a new, termly, Student Leadership Programme bulletin/newspaper.

Students with good media skills and an interest in reporting/journalism would be well suited to this role.

wider curriculum development

This is a new student leadership group with the purpose of supporting the school to improve the wider student experience at Crossley Heath.  Successful applicants will work closely with the school’s leaders to provide student voice on key matters relating to student experiences such as trips and visits and extra-curricular opportunities.

Students who have an interest in opportunities outside the classroom, who are able to think creatively and are willing to learn about the running of a large organisation can do well in this role.

Aims of our Student Leadership Programme

To empower students to work in partnership with staff, parents/carers, governors and community partners towards shared goals and promote the school’s core values

  • To enable creativity to flourish as the school community benefits from the wealth of experiences, ideas, skills and sense of fun that students bring
  • To provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills through a variety of inspiring, challenging and valued projects which impact positively on all members of our school community
  • To prepare students for their next steps into The Crossley Heath School 6th Form Leadership Team, apprenticeships, higher education and for achieving personal and professional excellence in life after formal education

Who should apply to be a student leader?

We invite any student who has an interest in contributing to a movement for positive change, who is passionate about one, or more, of the areas outlined above and who is seeking to develop their leadership skills.  In applying to become a Student Leader you should recognise that you will have a responsibility to invest time with your action group to bring about positive change.

Student Leadership Award

Our student leaders play a vital role in our continued school improvement.  Through their hard work and dedication, student leaders strengthen our school community and help to build the strongest sense of togetherness between students, staff, parents/carers, trustees and our local community partners.  We recognise the fantastic potential of our student leaders and look to celebrate their endeavours and success through our new Student Leadership Award
